Our story

Why we built CommuteAble.

Our founding team has worked directly in the accessibility and disability sector, including at the Motability Foundation, and has seen first-hand how often public transport fails disabled people. Not through malice, but through a consistent lack of the right information at the right moment.

Existing journey planners were built for everyone, which in practice means they were built for people without access needs. We decided to do it the other way around.

CommuteAble is built with accessibility at its core. It is being developed in close collaboration with people with mobility needs and is targeting WCAG 2.1 AA compliance. The platform is currently focused on London and the South West of England, with plans to expand UK-wide.

Our principles

Accessibility is not a feature.
It is the foundation. Every decision we make, from code to copy, starts from the perspective of people with mobility needs.
Free for the people who need it most.
The consumer app will always be free for people with mobility needs. Our B2B model funds the mission, not the other way around.
Built with communities, not for them.
We work directly with people with mobility needs, charities, and advocacy groups throughout our design process.
Data that improves lives, not just metrics.
Aggregated accessibility insights will be shared with operators and local authorities to drive real infrastructure improvements.
